![]() ![]() A sleep study monitors your sleep patterns throughout the night to identify anomalies used to make a diagnosis. Most sleep disorders are diagnosed through a sleep study. The Sleep Disorders Center is located down the hallway on the right side. ![]() Exit the elevator and take the hallway immediately to your left.Park for free in front of the Medical Office Building, east of the main entrance. The Sleep Disorders Center is attached to IU Health Saxony Hospital.If possible, do not allow your child to take any naps on the day of the study.(Caffeine can be found in chocolate, coffee, tea, soft drinks, and other sources.) Do not allow your child to consume caffeine after 12:00 noon on the day of the study.Do not use oils or lotions on your child’s hair or body.Please bring a pair of socks, just in case. Bring pajamas without “footies” for your child to sleep in.Feel free to bring snacks, as long as they do not contain caffeine. Serve your child dinner before arriving.Make sure the technologist knows the medicines you are giving your child. If your child will take any medicines at the Center, bring them with you. Give your child their usual medicines at their normal times, unless your doctor says otherwise.Ensure your child’s hair is clean, dry, and free of hair products.Bring any comfort items (like stuffed animals, blankets, or toys) that may help your child feel more at home.On the day of your child’s overnight sleep study, please make sure you do the following: A medications refrigerator (if you have nutritional items that need to be refrigerated, please bring a cooler with ice).This process is painless.ĭuring your child’s stay, you will have access to: Technologists will place sticker-like sensors on your child to monitor breathing, brain waves, eye movements, and muscle tone. Your test will be completed at 5:00 am, and you’ll be able to leave by 6:00 am. ![]() While you sleep, a sleep technologist will monitor your brain waves, breathing, oxygen level, and muscle movements. Your technologist will work with you to find one that is comfortable. There are several different types of PAP masks. This device helps open your airway so you can breathe better. You may use a positive airway pressure (PAP) mask while you sleep. Other loved ones can stay for a discounted rate. If needed, one caregiver can stay with you in the room overnight. You will be assigned a private room to sleep in. Do not drink caffeine or alcohol or use tobacco products after 2:00 pm.Īfter you arrive, a sleep technologist will place up to 30 small sensors on your head, torso, and legs.What NOT to do on the day of your overnight sleep study: Remove nail polish or false nails from at least one of your index fingers to allow placement of a sensor that will monitor oxygen levels.Hair pieces, weaves, and extensions must be removable to allow for placement of sensors. Ensure your hair is clean, dry, and free of hair products.On the day of your overnight sleep study, please make sure you do the following: Maintenance of wakefulness test (MWT): This test is often used by the Department of Transportation to determine a person’s ability to stay awake (to ensure it is safe for you to operate a motor vehicle).Multiple sleep latency rest (MSLT): This test uses a series of naps to help identify narcolepsy and daytime sleepiness.These tests are administered while you take a nap. Home sleep test: Used primarily to screen for obstructive sleep apnea, you will receive equipment and meet with a technologist who will instruct you on how to perform an overnight sleep study in the comfort of your own home.By monitoring your brain waves, oxygen levels, heart rate, breathing, eye movements, and leg movements, Duke’s sleep medicine specialists can learn more about your or your child’s sleep quality and what might be disturbing it.
